Virginia Non-Profit Hosts Voter Registration Event

In your opinion why are local elections just as if not more important than Presidential elections?

“Local Elections are more important than the Presidential elections because they decide what effects your everyday life. These elections decide your school board supervisors that will affect your children or the children in your community. The Mayor or City Council - this will affect your local tax and other zoning laws.”

Chandra Gore, CEO of the Urban Flight Foundation plans to register voters in time for the Virginia General election at the 2017 National Voter Registration Day. The Urban Flight Organization is committed to increase participation by education and encouraging local residents to register to vote.

From 6 - 9 pm on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, The Urban Flight Foundation will host a National Voter Registration Day 2017 event at the Porter Branch of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library, as part of a massive 50-state effort to register thousands of voters.

Chandra believes varying policies and liberties are at stake. “The Gubernatorial race is one that has been talked about as being very civil between Northam and Gillespe but with the republican candidate, Gillespe trying to distance himself from Trump and his not so clear stance on the violence in Charlottesville this may serve as an issue with his campaign,” she said. “In Stafford County, we have 4 Board of Supervisor positions and 4 School Board seats, 2 which are running unopposed this election day is very important to Stafford County.”

She went on to explain, “With the express lanes and tolls impacting Stafford county residents commutes as well as their wallets candidates are being mindful of offering solutions regarding the expansion efforts and tolling pricing system. The traffic on 610 and major developers and corporations bringing their companies to Stafford County are an issue each candidate running for Board of Supervisors have to address. This is a very hot topic. With the School District reeling from the finding of 6 schools that have been found to have unsafe water due to high levels of lead, teacher turnover due to low pay increases the candidates have to be sure to cover these issues.”

There is quickening happening across the nation… conversations surrounding immigration and Dreamers, White Nationalists instilling intimidation on college campuses, athlete activism – you name it. However silent or vocal your local legislators are on these pressing issues, if you are not hearing anything that remotely resembles empathy for the issues most pressing to you, you need to vote.

As a nonpartisan unofficial national holiday, National Voter Registration Day counts on thousands of partners and volunteers across the political spectrum. Started in 2012 for the presidential election, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right – the right to vote. Americans can register at hundreds of events across the nation and online at www.NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org.

Supporters can also follow National Voter Registration Day activities through social media on September 26 by searching #NationalVoterRegistrationDay.

Chandra Gore left me with 3 reasons why everyone should be a registered voter?

1. Your voice can and will be heard

2. You are able to create change

3. It is your right to Vote

If you are someone you know is not registered to vote, attend the Urban Flight Foundation’s National Voter Registration Day.
